Kinnaird Guitars

by luthier john kinnaird

I have been building guitars since 1976, developing a deep understanding of what makes a truly great-sounding instrument. My workshop is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, home to some of the finest musicians anywhere. Visitors are always welcome to stop by the shop when they are in the area.

With over 40 years of guitar building experience, I’ve developed a unique approach to construction and tone, shaped outside formal training. An early visit to J. Rhyne’s custom shop in Atlanta revealed that guitar making could be a true art form. Mentorship from craftsman Wade Lowe further refined my skills and philosophy. Today, my focus is creating fully custom instruments that meet each player’s aesthetic vision, sound preferences, and playing style.

John Kinnaird’s career as a luthier is unique: He has always been a part-time guitar builder and a full-time high school science teacher. On this episode of Luthier on Luthier, John shares his perspectives on 40 years of building instruments. It’s a fascinating talk with someone who makes guitars for a love of the craft beyond all else.
